Introduction

Welcome to MkLinux!

MkLinux, as you probably realize, is Apple Computer's Mach 3-based version of the GNU/Linux operating system. Versions of MkLinux run on the Intel, PA-RISC, and PowerPC architectures. This document is targeted at people wanting to use MkLinux on their PowerMacs.

MkLinux Pre-R1 is binary compatible with other PowerPC Linux systems such as LinuxPPC, so you can use binaries from other distributions on your MkLinux system. In addition, the file system MkLinux uses (ext2) is supported by all Linux systems, so you could access a partition formatted for MkLinux on an Intel-based Linux distribution.

Please do not contact directly Apple Computer's MkLinux team or Prime Time Freeware for support on MkLinux. Apple no longer supports MkLinux, and Prime Time Freeware does not have the resources to help you.

If, after reading these notes carefully, you still have trouble getting MkLinux to run, please make use of the wide variety of user-contributed support resources. Specifically, you should start with the "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ) in the Faq-O-Matic.

If the FAQ does not help you, please use the MkLinux mailing lists. The "mklinux-users" list is the most appropriate for any problems you might encounter while installing MkLinux Pre-R1. When you send a question to the list, please include as many details as possible, such as what kind of machine you are running, how much RAM it has, and any error messages you may have received. The members of the mklinux-users list are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about a wide range of machines.

How to install MkLinux

Installing MkLinux requires a fair amount of preparation. MkLinux (as well as other Unix variants) is quite a bit different than a MacOS system. Therefore this section is seperated into three parts.

Preparations deals mainly with how to partition your disk drive as well as the tools you can use to do so.
Installation is a relatively detailed description of the installation process.
What Now? is an example of some of the things you might want to do first when you have finished installing and start MkLinux for the first time.
